The Distance
a Marc Clebanoff film
You can't run from someone who doesn't exist...
The Distance, a modern day reinvention of Homer's The Odyssey, is a very character driven and inspirational story, which conveys an overall theme of the strength of the human spirit.
Cash, 18, has everything going for him: popularity, a beautiful girlfriend, and
the ability to become one of the greatest amateur distance runners in the nation.
But a seemingly flawless life is usually a cover up for a darker past.
When Cash is kidnapped by the chilling antagonist Nobody,
(naming himself after a reference from Homer's Greek epic
poem The Odyssey), he must come to terms with his haunting past.
As Cash discovers that his kidnapper, who is maniacally
driven by the haunting voice in his head, is the same man
that murdered his mother years earlier, and nearly killed
his father, he finds out exactly how far he is willing to go
for his own life as well as the lives of the ones he loves.
In the dark and eerie setting, which is Nobody's home, we experience
the sadistic physical and psychological hell that Cash must endure.
The audience also experiences through the eyes of Cash's friends, his girlfriend,
and his father,
... a seemingly flawless life is usually a cover up for a darker past.
exactly what they go through after his disappearance.
Damien must grapple with the thought of never seeing his best friend again.
Alicia is tormented by the thought of losing her first love. Todd must deal
with the guilt of being driven by jealousy, which inadvertently aided in Cash's
abduction. Finally, Jack must come to terms with knowing that his mistakes years
earlier are ultimately responsible for his son Cash's fate.
When Cash is finally able to out-smart and overcome Nobody, there is no "happily ever after."
A disturbing chain of events, which involves Nobody's abduction of Alicia, leads
to an absolutely shocking and completely unexpected conclusion in which Jack
must expose the past he has been trying to hide from Cash all his life.
Now driven by his haunting truth, Cash is once again put to the test by Nobody
in a very climactic, edge-of-your-seat race sequence in which he must rise to
a challenge that is assumed to be physically impossible, 10 miles in under 50
minutes, in order to save his girlfriend and himself. But as Cash proves over
and over, if you are willing to go the distance, anything is possible.
